Tool for Paperless Editing

CRM is a publishing company striving to be green. We’ve always done print runs specific to our schools’ needs, and we’re able to do this because we have many partners. In the past year our Career Guides were printed to FSC standards.

In an effort to cut even more paper out of our production process, Tim and Nan have installed iAnnotate on their iPads. To any of our career center partners: We invite you to install the app as well. If you haven’t begun to edit a hard copy of your guide, you will be able to do the edits in iAnnotate and send them to us electronically. We will exchange proofs with you in this manner as well.

Also, iAnnotate syncs with Dropbox, and we’d be happy to set up an editorial folder for materials submission and proofing.

Why are students not interested in my company?

Over the past couple of weeks, we have received phone calls and emails from employers who have attended career fairs, hosted information sessions or scheduled on-campus interviews but have not received interest from students. They either do not come to their career fair tables or info sessions (students also don’t show up to scheduled interviews). One tech recruiter was very upset because she flew across the country, spent a lot of money on airfare and lodging only to return to her hiring manager empty handed. Don’t let this happen to you! We’re Gazing Into the Future at CRM

The last time we chatted, we were heading into the very busy month of September with six Career Fair Guides in production, and we’re happy to report a successful outcome.

We’ve been invited back onto the team for the production of the University of Maryland’s spring event guide, so we must have done something right. We’re looking forward to working with them again, and with all of our other partners for their spring events.

What the Future Holds at CRM

This is the time of year when we take stock of the things we did right, and yes, the things we did wrong (or at least, the areas that need improvement), and we redesign ourselves.

A company, just like an individual, needs to exist in a state of training—learning new things and reassessing old techniques with a critical eye for what works and what doesn’t. CRM is sensitive to this. Thanks in large part to the feedback we get from our career center partners and their sponsors we know what we need to do to improve. We hear you!

So here are a few changes you’ll see from CRM in 2011:

New option available for your electronic version: PDF or SWF? To see a sample of a CRM-created SWF file, check out Virginia Tech’s Career Planning Guide. Check your planning packet for further details.
New hosting option: CRM is now offering our partners up to 5 Mb of hosting space for your electronic publication.
New CRM articles in the library. Planning sheet #2 will have the new options listed. (CRM Work In Progress)
New CRM article designs—multiple page designs of new and favorite old articles with artwork and a little white space thrown in for good measure. The designs will be available in the CRM Article Library PDF that will be appearing soon on CRMpubs. (CRM Work In Progress)

Features with appeal for everyone:

CRM is going green! All CRM publications will use paper that is produced in accordance with the Forest Stewardship Council’s (FSC) guidelines. We started this conversion in the 2010-11 season, but we are fully committing to it for 2011-12.
Whether our career center partners choose a PDF or SWF file for their electronic version, all advertisers will enjoy one active link in their ad.

Summer…What Summer?!?

We’d like to be able to tell you all about our summer vacations, but the reason for our long silence has more to do with being at the height of production than lounging on a beach with a good summertime read. Truth be told, we’ve managed to enjoy some cycling, running, gardening, golfing, a notable birthday party, and other fun summer pursuits amongst the work.

We’ve reached a point where most, but not all, of the books have gone to the printer and are being shipped to the schools for the beginning of the new school year. Post-production book PDFs are beginning to be sent to the schools so they can post their books on their websites if they choose to do so.

Books and covers keep coming in, and we’re loving it! We are starting to make production status calls to our partner schools to find out how covers and content edits are progressing. Next week we are expecting to hear from a lot of academic sponsors since May 3^rd is an early reservation deadline. Why so early, you ask? We’ve been busy making Career Guide updates for our partner schools who’ve turned in their materials.

We’d like to encourage those schools who haven’t contacted us yet about their covers to go ahead and do so as soon as possible. We won’t design a cover for you until we hear from you, because after all, you may be designing your own!
